Jason Grout
I am an open-source Jupyter developer and community leader and a staff software engineer at Databricks.
After wrapping up a few projects, I will be leaving Databricks in June 2025. I am looking for new opportunities that involve collaborating on open-source Jupyter software and standards while building systems on top of Jupyter, particularly where I can continue to serve in leadership roles in the Jupyter community. If you know of such an opportunity, please reach out to me at (enable JavaScript).
At Databricks, I primarily worked on Databricks features built on Jupyter, such as Python code execution, editor features like syntax error highlighting, ipywidgets support, and Jupyter notebook import/export. In the last year, I was also the technical lead for a team of 5 engineers.
In Jupyter, I currently serve in leadership positions. I have also worked primarily on JupyterLab and the interactive Jupyter Widgets system.
I currently serve on:
- Project Jupyter Executive Council (since 2023)
- Jupyter Foundation Governing Board as a Jupyter Executive Council representative (since 2024)
- Jupyter Community Building Committee (and helped lead Jupyter Community Workshops since 2018).
- Jupyter Trademarks Committee (since 2019)
Previously, I was a senior software engineer at Bloomberg (2014-2021), an assistant professor of mathematics at Drake University (2009-2014), served on the Jupyter Steering Council (2015-2022), and contributed to the open-source SageMath software system for many years.
